The Grid
The Wumpus World consists of a 4x4 grid in which W8OW starts in the bottom left corner. W8OW must then navigate its way to try to reach the gold then return back to the start.

Within the Wumpus World, there is exactly one Wumpus, one pile of gold, and a number of pits.

Each square of the grid may include up to one thing. Some squares many contain nothing while one square may contain a pit, the Wumpus, or gold.
The Goal
W8OW must navigate the Wumpus World to reach the pile of gold then return back to the starting position without falling into a hole or being killed by the Wumpus.
Theoretical Wumpus World
Depicted to the left is a Wumpus World generated by a Wumpus World generator. This Wumpus World includes four pits (dark red elipses), one Wumpus (red square), and a pile of gold.

In every Wumpus World, it is guaranteed that the squares adjacent to the starting square do not contain any obstacles.

W8OW is only allowed to move to a square that is adjacent the the square he is currently in.
As he moves from square to square, his sensors will relay information about the locations of things in the adjacent squares.

If there are no obstacles/gold in any of the adjacent squares, a value of 0 will be returned.
If there is a pit in any of the adjacent squares, a value of 1 will be returned. Even if there is more than one pit in the adjacent squares, still only a 1 will be returned. For example, if W8OW was located in the square labeled 1, he would receive a value of 1 even though more than one pit is in the adjacent squares.

If the Wumpus is in any of the adjacent squares, a value 2 will be returned. W8OW is in possession of one arrow that allows him to kill the Wumpus, but he must be facing the Wumpus to kill it. Once the Wumpus has been killed, the spot that was previously occupied by the Wumpus will be safe for W8OW to travel through.

If the pile of gold is in any of the adjacent squares, a value of 4 will be returned. Once W8OW occupies the square that the gold occupies, a value of 8 will be returned. At this point, he must navigate the Wumpus World back to the starting square in order to win.

If he were to be in the square labeled 2, a value of 3 would be returned because the value returned is the sum of all of the obstacles/gold in the adjacent squares. If he were to then face the Wumpus and shoot it with an arrow to kill it, the space occupied by the red square would disappear.

If W8OW falls into a pit, he is killed by the Wumpus, or goes off the board, he loses the game.

If he successfully retrieves the gold and returns to the start without running into any obstacles, he wins the game.
